Your car battery? It probably isn’t something that you think about on a daily basis, but maybe you should spare it a thought sometime.
On average, a car’s battery should last somewhere between two and five years. But wouldn’t it be better if it could be on the five-year end of that spectrum? Of course, it would be!
So how do you go about extending the life of your vehicle?
Follow these simple tips and get the best possible performance from your car or truck’s battery.
GO FOR A LONGER RIDE
This is going to sound weird, but actually, one way to prolong the life of your car battery is to go for a slightly longer ride. That is, one that is longer than a twenty-minute round trip.
Because, believe it or not, a lot of short trips can actually be the cause of a battery dying.
The reason why short trips can be the death of your battery is because gas powered cars are actually recharged by the engine.
We would recommend taking a longer than twenty minute trip about once a week, in order to give the battery a proper chance to recharge in.
TURN OUT THE LIGHTS
One of the most common causes on a sudden flat battery is accidentally leaving the lights on overnight.
We know that nobody does this on purpose, but it is always a good habit to get into, of checking that your lights are off each and every time you get out of the vehicle.
DISCONNECT THE BATTERY IF YOU ARE GOING AWAY
If you are planning on leaving your vehicle for long periods of time – i.e. more than a couple of days, then it is a good idea to disconnect the battery.
So if you were going on vacation and leaving your car at home, or maybe parked up somewhere, we would advise disconnecting the battery from it.
This is because even switched off your car still uses small amounts of energy. And this can be saved by disconnecting your battery.
It all helps!
CLEAN THE TERMINALS ON THE BATTERY (WITH CARE)
Now this is a tip which should only be attempted with extreme caution. But in order to further preserve the battery life of your car, cleaning the terminals of the battery of all debris, will help it.
We would advise watching an instructional video on exactly how to achieve this, however, and then following it carefully.
